But Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation, “little dog,” is closer to the Russian title. When I first started reading this book, I was doing so at work, online on Project Gutenberg. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who have also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are behind this new version of Boris Pasternak's breathtakingly wonderful novel. As my sister Katharine Holt, a Russian literature scholar, recently reminded me, one could read “The Lady with the Little Dog” as a lower-stakes version of Anna Karenina. I've also just realised that they've won a translation prize. I definitely prefer Pevear/Volokhonsky to Garnett as translators of Russian works. I've just checked my copy of Anna Karenina and it's by Pevear and Volokhonsky. Books: Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy. I especially love the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of Anna Karenina, so I really looked forward to their translation of Doctor Zhivago. I don't really understand why this is so different from their previous translations, as Pevear and Volokhonsky's Anna Karenina is wonderful, and doesn't have these problems at all. As “The Lady with the Lap Dog” because the first twenty or so times I read it, the title was translated that way. It's an affair in which the woman feels guilty and sad, but doesn't kill herself.
